Ponmudi, The Golden Peak

Ponmudi may be small in size but its captivating beauty places it among top places to visit in Kerala in summer. Situated some odd 53 km from Trivandrum, the place offers breathtaking sight of the mountains, verdant forests, cascading waterfall, and ravines making it a perfect getaway for nature lovers, wildlife buffs and adventure seekers. With its tea estates and mist covered valleys Ponmudi is a fast developing hill station. 

Popularly called Golden Peak, The hill station has a rich river. You can spot many animals and fishes here. The climate is pleasing throughout the year and you can find many tourists during summer season. If a little adventure is your thing, you can enjoy trekking and hiking at Agasthyakoodam which is the highest peak of Trivandrum district. 

Also, heading to the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary will let you spot a variety of fauna including Asian elephants, sambar, lion-tailed macaques, Malabar grey hornbills and more.

One can either sit and relax amid the soothing surroundings or explore the sprawling tea gardens. This serene landscape is made up of forest and green grass that carpets the ground. You can spot many exotic mountain flowers, butterflies and rich tea estates here.

To-Do In Ponmudi

Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary, Ponmudi is located along the catchment area of the Peppara Dam on the Karamana River. The sanctuary rich in flora and fauna offers a natural habitat to around 43 species of mammals, 233 species of birds, 46 species of reptiles, 13 species of amphibians and 27 species of fishes. Trekking – Ponmudi serves as trekker’s paradise offering several beautiful trails. Trekkers would enjoy the trails at Varayattumotta, Chinnappulle and Braemoor supported by guides, and organized by Ponmudi Vana Samrakshana Samithi. Other trekking routes include a trek to Bonafalls, Vazahuvanthole waterfalls and Kalarkad waterfalls. It is advised to take a local guide while indulging in the activity.

Menmutty Waterfalls, ponmudi is located in the district of Thiruvananthapuram, is around 45 km from the city centre and is one of the most prominent attractions. The crystal clear water cascading from the mountain top offers a beautiful sight to behold. A number of small ponds formed near the waterfall add to the overall beauty. The trek leading to these waterfalls passes through dense forests. A special permission from the forest department has to be taken before embarking on the trek.

Ponmudi view point is a place that offers wonderful scenic beauty. Great place for visit with family. The way to Ponmudi is a good driving route. There are 22 hairpin curves on the road. entrance opens by 8.30 am controlled by forest dept, cars are allowed you have to drive for 1-2 km up hill once you reach the main point you have walkable concrete road leading to view point. after some distance you have to climb raw hill , difficult for elderly people & mist crosses you frequently. View point is in the top of hill and it is a 3 storeyed RCC open building . Climbing this building and watching the nature is the memorable feeling .

Where To Stay

Usually people come here as a one day trip from thiruvananthapuram. But some times this place effects you in such a way you don’t wanna leave. For Such Cases KTDC Golden Peak Ponmudi Resort they are listed on Agoda.com, but usually you have to contact the resort for booking. While Hill View Stay Inn Ponmudi is also a nice option at price around 3000rs.

How To Reach

Ponmudi is situated at 60 km drive from Thiruvananthapuram. Thiruvananthapuram Railway Station and Trivandrum international airport are connected to all major Indian cities and abroad. From there you can go by bus operated by Private operators and Kerala State Transport Corporation. Or you can also book taxi or cab from the station. I personally think zoomcar is the best option.
